Planned Giving, A Legacy for the Animals You Love

Your generosity saves the lives of animals.

Your gifts provide needy animals with a home, healthcare, and food; and your gifts help connect people with pets. To provide lasting support for animals and for the people who love them, please consider including Prairie’s Edge Humane Society in your will or estate plan.

Like other forms of donations, Planned Giving supports PEHS in three key ways. First, your gifts help meet the immediate needs of homeless animals that require shelter, food, and care. Second, your gifts help PEHS assist owners and pets. Shelter programs aid families in selecting appropriate pets, provide microchipping to prevent the loss of pets, and offer pet training. Such programs enable people and their pets to have long and happy lives together. Third, PEHS supports spay/neuter programs and other initiatives intended to reduce the number of unwanted animals.

Planned giving in particular supports long-term goals. It is very valuable to the maintenance of the shelter building and to strategic planning which connects the shelter’s services with the projected needs of the community.

Planned giving also helps donors. It is a tax-deductible donation that allows you to control your resources and carry your wishes into the future. Whether small or large, your planned gift enables you and PEHS to plan ahead and insure long-term benefits to animals.

There are many approaches to planned giving, and your lawyer or financial advisor can help you determine which best suits your needs and wishes. One of the most common gifts is a bequest of a specific dollar amount. For example, you could state in your will that $10,000 dollars (or whatever amount you determine) is designated for PEHS. The advantage of this form is that you know and can share with PEHS the exact amount of the bequest.

Another form of gift is a bequest of a percentage of your estate. In this case, you could state that 10% of your estate (or whatever percentage you determine) is designated for PEHS. The advantage of a percentage-based gift is that the gift increases as your estate increases.

Also, you can discuss in advance with PEHS and your own advisors whether you want the gift applied to general expenses or to a specific need or program. For example, you could make a gift to the building fund or make a gift in support of spay-neuter programs. An additional option is a memorial donation, given to honor another person.

Many other types of planned gifts are possible. You can designate PEHS as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy, or brokerage account. PEHS does not provide legal expertise, but again your own advisors can provide helpful direction here.

Remember, with your support, animals find homes and people find pets.
